China’s BYD Jumps to No. 2 in Global EV Battery Market

The world’s electric vehicle (EV) market is growing rapidly as led by the Chinese auto market, and BYD is quickly moving upward as one of the world’s largest EV battery sellers, as shown in a new report.

BYD surpassed LG Energy Solutions as the world’s second-largest EV battery seller in July, supplying a total of 6.4 gigawatt-hours of batteries worldwide, according to a report from Seoul, South Korea research firm SNE Research on Monday (via Bloomberg).

LG fell to third place in the global market in July, supplying just 4.4 GWh ahead of Japan’s Panasonic, which had 2.9 GWh of batteries supplied. Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd. (CATL) remained the world’s largest supplier of EV batteries with 13.3 GWh total supplied globally.

The world’s total EV battery sales jumped 80 percent year over year, for a total of 39.7 GWh sold marketwide.

Year-to-date rankings stayed the same with CATL taking 34.7 percent of the global EV battery market share, while LG and BYD took 14.2 percent and 12.6 percent, respectively.

BYD’s blade batteries began delivering to Tesla’s factory in Berlin just a month ago, and automakers Toyota and NIO have also discussed partnering with the automaker and EV battery manufacturer.

In addition to selling batteries, BYD sells its own EVs and is set to expand beyond the Chinese auto market in the months to come.
