Tesla Model Y Dominates Global EV Sales in June 2022

Battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) have reached a global tipping point so far this year, despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, a war in Ukraine, rising inflation and other barriers.

June marked a record-breaking month in which BEVs reached a 12 percent global market share while plugins, in general, reached 16 percent market share, according to data compiled by Clean Technica.

Additionally, BEVs led the top three plugin vehicle sales spots, hinting that the hybrid vehicle configuration is at its peak — and is beginning to be overtaken by fully-electric models.

This also marks the first time BEVs crept into the double-digits zone, as led by the Tesla Model Y, Tesla Model 3 and the super-affordable Wuling HongGuang Mini EV.

Tesla sold 97,950 Model Y units in June to lead the pack, with the Model 3 landing in second with 53,768 units sold. Model Y sales surged 130% year-over-year, jumping from third place last year to its current #1 ranking.

Close behind the Model 3 was the Wuling HongGuang Mini EV.

Tesla dominated EV sales in Europe for the month of June, with BEVs, in general, facing a 4 percent jump in registrations within the month.

Like many automakers, Tesla’s Giga Shanghai production facility faced a long production halt in March and April, and the factory took months to ramp back up to full capacity.

Tesla has also been upgrading production lines at Giga Berlin and Giga Shanghai to increase production capacity.
