Tesla Leads in California, as Zero-Emission Vehicles Hit 16.5% in Q2

As electric vehicles (EVs) increase in market share throughout much of the world, one state has helped lead the push into mainstream EV adoption — and its most recent sales numbers are something worth writing home about.

The state of California released details on zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) on the road last week, and the data shows that the state saw an increase to 16.5 percent market share of ZEVs in the second quarter, according to data shared by the state.

Additionally, 8 out of 10 of the largest market shares for ZEVs were found in Bay Area counties.

In Q1, ZEV market share reached 16.3 percent, before jumping by 0.3 percent going into Q2.

There were 79,129 ZEVs sold in Q2, with Los Angeles, Alameda, Santa Clara, San Mateo and San Diego being the counties with the highest numbers of ZEVs sold.

The poster also noted that Tesla’s market share increased to more than 60 percent this year.

Meanwhile, no other automakers came close to this level of market share, Kia and Hyundai made major leaps to reach current levels of 3.8 and 4.2 percent market share, respectively.

Toyota and BMW also were major players in the market despite still not coming close to Tesla, with them selling a total of 4.4 percent and 3.9 percent of ZEV market share, respectively.
