Tesla’s software update 2022.20.5 has enabled vehicles to recognize variable highway speed limit signs in the UK, according to a video shared by one driver on Sunday (via Reddit).

Additionally, it seemed to enable highway speed sign recognition in select countries and temporary road sign detection.

Previously, the feature was only available for regular roads and not highways, though the driver also noted a few flaws with the new release.

For one, the vehicle sometimes displays a sign’s speed for a split second before changing back to 70, according to the driver, recording the video from their 2019 Model 3 Performance. While these speed limit signs are recognized, the vehicle does not alter speed, as it does for vehicles in North America.

Regarding another issue, the driver wrote, “I believe after 30 seconds of not seeing a sign it’ll revert to 70 as well, which is incorrect in slow traffic.” The driver continued, “It’s also kind of flawed as it’ll adjust the speed after passing the speed limit sign, but in the UK some of these signs will have a speed camera on the back on them so you need to be doing the posted speed as you pass the sign.”

Tesla’s software update 2022.20.5 also showed other updates in the release notes, including Speed Assist speed sign reading for Italy and the Netherlands, migrating search histories with driver profiles, Bluetooth multiplayer gaming support and more.
