It was reported last night Tesla was set to reopen its Gigafactory in Shanghai, China, on Monday, but now will no longer be happening, according to an internal memo seen by Reuters.
An internal Tesla notice seen by Reuters told workers and suppliers Giga Shanghai will not reopen on Monday as planned. The memo did not explain the reasons why the opening was cancelled. Nearly all of Shanghai is currently under lockdown due to the spread of a COVID-19 outbreak.
Originally, Tesla had hoped for operations at Giga Shanghai to close only for four days, but that has now been extended. The factory is Tesla’s export hub to Europe and Asia and currently makes 16,000 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles per week, according to a source speaking with Reuters.
Yesterday, Tesla announced its Q1 2022 vehicle production and deliveries. The company was able to deliver a record-breaking 310,048 cars, despite chip shortages and supply chain constraints.
“This was an *exceptionally* difficult quarter due to supply chain interruptions & China zero Covid policy,” said Musk on Saturday, reacting to the news. “Outstanding work by Tesla team & key suppliers saved the day,” added the Tesla CEO.
