Tesla to Restart Production at Giga Shanghai on April 4: Report
Tesla’s Gigafactory in Shanghai, China, is reportedly set to resume production as soon as Monday, April 4, according to unnamed sources speaking with Reuters.
The factory in Shanghai has been shut down since March 28, due to COVID-19 surges in the city. The government locked down areas east of the Huangpu River, where Tesla’s Gigafactory is located, part of a two-stage shutdown to contain the virus.
The restart date on Monday may change due to Shanghai’s ongoing COVID-19 protocols, said one source to Reuters.
Currently, nearly all of Shanghai is on lockdown. Tesla wanted to only stop production for four days at its plant, and previous re-opening plans for Friday and Saturday were halted after city authorities tightened the lockdown in the eastern part of the city.
Tesla produces 10,000 Model Y vehicles weekly and 6,000 Model 3 vehicles weekly at its Gigafactory in Shanghai, which is currently seeing its longest delays in production since late 2019, one source told Reuters. One week of a shutdown means 16,000 cars aren’t being produced, amid heavy demand for Tesla vehicles.
On Saturday morning, Tesla announced its Q1 2022 vehicle production and deliveries. The company was able to deliver a record-breaking 310,048 cars, despite chip shortages and supply chain constraints.
“This was an *exceptionally* difficult quarter due to supply chain interruptions & China zero Covid policy,” said Musk on Saturday, reacting to the news. “Outstanding work by Tesla team & key suppliers saved the day,” added the Tesla CEO.
