Sweden is adopting electric vehicles (EVs) at fairly high rates and recently surpassed some important milestones with Tesla at the forefront of the shift.

Sweden’s first and second best-selling EVs in March were the Tesla Model Y and 3 with 1,363 and 990 units sold, respectively, according to data compiled from BIL Sweden by CleanTechnica.

Tesla’s vehicles were the country’s best and second-best-selling EVs, displacing past favorites from Volkswagen and Kia.

Just behind the Model Y and 3 were the Volkswagen ID.4 (906), the Kia Niro (773) and the Volvo XC40 (596).

Looking at this quarter combined with last quarter, the Tesla Model Y’s sales put the vehicle in third place, while the Model 3 drops down to sixth place.

In addition, the Polestar 2 jumps up to the fifth best-seller from the sixth spot in the current quarter.

Plugin EVs took 55.6 percent of the auto market share in Sweden in March, up 37 percent year-over-year.

Battery-electric vehicles took 31.8 percent of the market, while the overall auto market volume dropped by about 16.6 percent since before the pandemic.

The move comes as the Swedish government has re-upped incentive funding for plugin electrics, offering consumers peace of mind that they’ll be reimbursed for EV purchases.

Last September a Tesla Model Y Long Range drove 1,000 km (621 miles), showing an impressive amount of efficiency despite having to stop and charge.
