SpaceX’s Starlink App Contains ‘Dogecoin’ Image [Update]
SpaceX’s Starlink iOS app now contains a picture of a Shiba Inu used to represent the cryptocurrency, Dogecoin.
The discovery of the image addition within the Starlink iOS app assets “coin.png” was discovered by developer Steve Moser. He tells Tesla North the image was discovered two days ago, but just shared today. This is not an April Fool’s Day joke said Moser, despite the timing of his sharing of the news.
“Alright, who put this @Dogecoin image in @SpaceX’s Starlink app? @elonmusk is SpaceX going to accept Dogecoin payments for Starlink hardware and service? SpaceX already accepts Dogecoin for its DOGE-1 Moon mission and Tesla accepts for Dogecoin for merchandise,” said Moser.
Back in December, Tesla started to accept Dogecoin payment for some merchandise.
Back in May 2021, it was announced SpaceX was set to launch the DOGE-1 mission to the Moon in early 2022, fully-funded by Dogecoin. This latest image asset added to the Starlink app could be hinting at this launch, or the possibility of paying for Starlink accessories with Dogecoin.
The Starlink iOS app was last updated on March 29, 2022. It allows Starlink customers to set up and manage all aspects of their satellite internet service.
Earlier today, SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket launched the Transporter-4 rideshare mission to lower Earth orbit. The company is on pace for 60 Falcon 9 launches in 2022.
Update: Looks like this was indeed an April Fool’s Day Easter egg by SpaceX. The Starlink app, when scanning the sky for obstructions, will show flying ‘Dogecoin’ images. Nicely done.
