Tesla China Sells Nearly 60,000 Cars in January, Up 287% vs 2021
In January, Tesla’s Gigafactory Shanghai saw a surge in deliveries — but not for those within China.
Tesla China sold 59,845 units in January, marking a 286.5 percent increase on the year and a 15.5 decrease from the automaker’s December numbers, according to data shared by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) on Monday (via CNEVPost).
Among the sales were 40,499 exported units, representing one of Tesla’s largest export months yet — landing a close second to October’s 40,666 units exported.
In China, Tesla sold 19,346 units from its Shanghai Gigactory, after the automaker sold a record 70,847 units.

The news also comes amidst increasing competition in China, which is the world’s largest auto market, with local rivals Xpeng Motors, Li Auto and NIO all seeing deliveries surge in China in January.
European automaker Stellantis also announced plans to move into the Chinese market this year, just a few months after Ford began delivering its Mustang Mach-E in the country.
A post from the Liaoning government’s WeChat caused rumors to spread over the weekend that Tesla may be building a new factory in Shenyang, though Tesla denied the rumors.
