Tesla Model 3: Europe’s Best-Selling EV for 2021 and Climbing
The Tesla Model 3 was the best-selling battery electric vehicle (BEV) in Europe for 2021, and also broke into the top 20 best-selling cars overall, according to data from JATO Dynamics covering 28 European markets (via InsideEVs).
A total of 141,429 Tesla Model 3 vehicles were registered in Europe during the year (up 64% year-over-year), putting the all-electric sedan in the #17 spot for new vehicle registrations by volume. No other EV was able to place in the top 50, let alone the top 20.
In December alone, a record 27,358 Model 3s were registered in Europe, topping new car sales for the month. Tesla also led monthly new car sales for the region in September.
The top BEVs in Europe for 2021, by volume, included:
- Tesla Model 3: 141,429 units (up 64%)
- Renault ZOE: 71,614 units (down 28%)
- Volkswagen ID.3: 69,206 units (up 23%)
- Volkswagen ID.4: 54,715 units (new)
What’s more, the Tesla Model 3 made it into the top 10 best-selling vehicles across all drivetrains in five European countries, claiming the #1 spot in two:
- Austria (10th)
- Germany (10th)
- Norway (1st)
- Switzerland (1st)
- U.K. (2nd position)
The Tesla Model 3 also topped JATO Dynamics‘s ‘Midsize Car’ category for the year.
Tesla ranked #21 for most popular automotive brands in Europe in 2021, not far behind MINI and ahead of Mazda, Jeep, Land Rover, Porsche, and Mitsubishi, with a total of 167,969 registrations across all of its offerings.
Testament to its popularity in the region, the Model 3 is already sold out in Europe through the first quarter.
