Tesla Model 3 Topped EV Sales in Germany for 2021
Tesla’s Model 3 electric sedan was the best-selling electric vehicle (EV) in Germany for December and the year 2021 as a whole — reports Tesmanian.
According to data from Germany’s Federal Bureau of Motor Vehicles (KBA), the Model 3 took the crown for most EV sales in the country in 2021 with a whopping 35,262 units registered in the year.
Volkswagen’s e-UP! and ID.3 ranked second and third for EV sales by volume, with 30,797 and 26,693 deliveries respectively.
Volkswagen’s global EV deliveries jumped 97% to 263,000 units during 2021. Tesla, on the other hand, delivered over 936,000 all-electric cars across the globe last year, up 87% from 2020.
In December alone, 48,436 all-electric vehicles were registered in Germany, 12.6% (6,096 units) of which were Tesla Model 3s.
The Model 3 also ranked 11th in overall car sales across all drivetrains in the country. Total EV share in the German automotive market grew to 13.6% in 2021, an 83.3% increase compared to 2020.
The Tesla Model 3 was the best-selling EV in Canada for 2021, as well as the second best-selling new car in the U.K.
Tesla’s largest European market in 2021 was Germany, where the American EV pioneer is giving resident automotive giant Volkswagen a run for its money.
Sales in Germany (and the rest of Europe) are expected to gain even more traction once Tesla’s Berlin-Brandenburg Gigafactory goes online later this year.
Tesla’s German Gigafactory is at the cusp of starting operations. The company submitted final approval documents for the production facility last month but is still waiting on the Brandenburg Ministry for full approval.
Brandenburg Minister-President Dietmar Woidke said last month that Tesla’s final permit approval would be coming in early 2022, so it shouldn’t be much longer now.
