It was nearly a year ago that Japanese tech company Sony’s VISION-S 01 Electric Vehicle (EV) was first spotted road testing in Europe, and coming into 2022, the company has officially announced a new project with plans to develop the vehicles.

Sony will launch Sony Mobility Group in the spring, just as company President Kenichiro Yoshida said on Wednesday that the company is “exploring a commercial launch” of EVs, according to Reuters.

Prior to the CES technology trade fair held in the U.S., Yoshida detailed the company’s plans to leverage its expertise in entertainment and sensors to create next-generation mobility.

Before the news conference, Yoshida said, “With our imaging and sensing, cloud, 5G and entertainment technologies combined with our contents mastery, we believe Sony is well-positioned as a creative entertainment company to redefine mobility.”

Following the announcement, shares of Sony rose 4.2 percent in Tokyo on the Nikkei stock index.

In addition to the VISION-S 01, Yoshida also shared a prototype for the VISION-S 02 electric SUV, built on the same drivetrain as the company’s VISION-S 01.
