Tesla Software Sends Uneven Tire Wear Alert for Owner in China

Tesla tire wear

It appears Tesla’s software is capable of detecting more than just tire pressure, according to one Tesla owner in China. In a screenshot shared by Chris Zheng (@zxk9523), we see a message on Tesla display in Chinese, which says there is uneven tire wear and the tread depth of the rear tire is low.

The message is shown over what looks to be a Model Y compact crossover.

“Tesla OS can detect the degree of tire wear!”, said Zheng. “The Chinese characters above mean: uneven tire wear,-the depth of the rear tire tread is too low, please make an appointment for a tire inspection!”.

Normally, Tesla is able to track each tire’s air pressure thanks to Bluetooth Low Energy Tire Pressure Monitoring Sensors (BLE TPMS). But the ability to track tire wear by measuring rubber depth appears to be new.

Zheng told Telsa North the image was shared by a Tesla owner in China on social media application WeChat. We’ll try to find out which software version this is, to get specifics on whether this apparent feature will land in North America or Europe. We’ll update this post accordingly.

Tesla recently debuted some new features first in China, particularly offering acoustic rear glass on the Model Y (joining acoustic front glass), along with AMD Ryzen chips for the latter (from Model S/X refresh), plus a 12V lithium-ion battery. These features were first spotted on Performance versions of the Model Y, but it was later discovered to be available on Long Range versions as well.

Update Dec. 13: We’re also seeing this message outside of China too, according to @Brangwyn, with someone sharing a similar screenshot to Facebook but in English, saying, “anyone ever get this message? I got new winter tires on that I got last winter. Threads are fine. Never got this message last winter or for 2 months. I’ve had them on this year.”

Update 2: According to developer @greentheonly, he explained to Tesla North the alerts seen above were part of the 2021.44.5 software update, which specifically mentioned, “Uneven tire wear – Rear tire tread depth too low” and also “Schedule service for tire inspection and rotation.”
