Volkswagen Confirms ‘ID California’ Electric Camper
According to Roadshow by CNet, Volkswagen officially confirmed a camper version of its upcoming ID Buzz electric microbus in a press release dated Thursday, December 9.
In the press release, Volkswagen announced investments in the electrification of its Hanover manufacturing plant, where it hopes to build Bentley bodies. The German automaker went on to reveal that “another vehicle derivative, the ID California, has likewise been approved for the site.”
The ID Buzz California will add to Volkswagen’s already impressive range of campers, all of which are derived from the company’s commercial vans but unfortunately don’t include any all-electric options as of yet.
Volkswagen’s California line of vehicles is specifically designed for the outdoors, with the base California even including a pop-up roof that gives campers a whole lot of extra room to play around with. As such, we can expect the ID Buzz-based electric California to also feature some camping-specific upgrades, including seats that fold into beds and possibly a small kitchen.
The ID California will be built on a version of Volkswagen’s MEB electric vehicle (EV) platform, much like the fairly successful ID.4 SUV, Under the hood, the all-electric camper is expected to sport a 111 kWh battery pack.
“The ID California based on the ID Buzz will combine the ongoing trend towards mobile leisure arrangements with sustainable CO2-neutral mobility,” said Carsten Intra, Volkswagen’s CEO of Commercial Vehicles.
Not much else is known about the ID Buzz California as of yet — not even a potential price or timeline for launch. Unfortunately, it is highly unlikely that Volkswagen will ever launch the ID California in North America.
Last month, Volkswagen launched pre-orders for its upcoming ID.5 electric SUV in Germany.
