Tesla Supercharger Pricing Change: Billing Per Minute by Charging Speed
As Tesla surpassed 30,000 Superchargers worldwide last week, the company has changed its per-minute billing model for Superchargers, based on how fast each charger charges the user’s vehicle.
Tesla has changed its Supercharger pricing model from two charging speed tiers to four, according to a chart from Tesla as shared on Reddit.
Tesla’s recently updated Supercharger page details the new tiered pricing:
The change accommodates for differing charge speeds when being billed by the minute, with tier 1 for slow-charging sessions and tier 4 for the quickest charging sessions.
According to the chart, drivers will be charged the tier 1 pricing for charging sessions at or below 60 kW, while tier 2 applies to those charging between 60 kW and 100 kW, with tier 3 applying to those between 100 and 180 kW, and, finally, with tier 4 charging prices for those charging above 180 kW.
Tesla’s fastest V3 Superchargers offer charging speeds up to 250 kW.
One Reddit user also shared photos of the pricing model split up on their bill from a Supercharger in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, which shows the amount billed per minute on the receipt.
For tier 1 charging, the user’s receipt displays $0.14 per minute, showing prices of $0.38 per minute, $0.71 per minute and $1.15 per minute for tiers 2, 3 and 4, respectively.
Tesla points out, “whenever possible, owners are billed by kWh (kilowatt-hour), in other areas, owners are billed per minute.” So the changes above may not apply to your particular area.
The news also comes ahead of Tesla’s wide update of its Superchargers to be able to work with non-Tesla electric vehicle (EV) brands. The Supercharging service became available to non-Tesla EVs in the Netherlands earlier this month, with a wider release around the world set for the near future.
