As Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) beta is rolling out to more users with high safety scores, other autonomous driving systems are offering similar services, including Alphabet’s Waymo – though it’s tough to say with any certainty which systems are superior without testing them out.

A new video shared by CallasEV on Saturday tests Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) beta 10.4 against Waymo’s autonomous driving vehicle to see which vehicle arrives at its destination more quickly.

The video shows split-screen footage of the two vehicles driving the same rate, as well as a handy progress bar at the top that shows each vehicle’s progress, heading to the Chandler Museum in Phoenix, Arizona.

Waymo’s autonomous vehicle uses lidar radar-based sensing technology, while Tesla uses a camera-only and ultrasonic sensor system. It’s also worth noting that Tesla’s FSD is in beta and requires an actively-engaged driver at all times in case of emergencies.

During the video, Tesla’s FSD seems to struggle less than the Waymo system, though both do make it safely to the destination. The driver narrates each videos route and overall trip, noting certain quirks about both along the way.

Waymo also launched a “trusted user” autonomous ride-hailing system in San Francisco in August, including a teaser video showing many of the program’s first civilian passengers.

With Waymo, the system travels on pre-determined routes and the drive stuck to neighbourhood streets, while Tesla’s FSD beta 10.4 used part of the freeway for its drive.
