Tesla Cars are Auto Connecting to Wi-Fi at Select Superchargers
Tesla’s vehicles are more than just electric cars, with a number of smart connectivity features and more, and in a recent post, one Tesla driver noted that their vehicle auto-connected to a wireless network while charging at a Supercharger.
One Tesla driver reported that their vehicle automatically connected to a wireless network called “tesla-vehicle” at a Supercharger station, asking fellow users if the feature was new (via Reddit).
The feature was discovered at a Supercharger station in Kettleman City, California, and other users also attested to having noticed the feature at the Kettleman City Supercharger station.
Another user pointed out that the Kettleman City Supercharger is located next to a Service Center with a lounge and store, which likely explained why the internet was offered in that location. Many of Tesla’s Superchargers next to Service Centers do also include auto-connecting wireless internet, according to other users in the thread.
Still, others noted that having users connect to Tesla’s WiFi could save money for Tesla in the long run, especially as drivers end up using Tesla’s network to stream and browse while waiting for their vehicles to charge, instead of using their own cellular data network or another alternative.
Tesla’s Superchargers are set to open up to other electric vehicle (EV) brands in the coming months, though no reports of individual Supercharger stations including dedicated WiFi have yet surfaced.
