Ferrari and Former Apple Designer Jony Ive to Develop Electric Car
Ferrari SF90 Stradale: the company’s current hybrid-electric offering
Ferrari announced on Monday it has teamed up with former legendary Apple designer Sir Jony Ive and his firm, LoveFrom, to develop an electric car.
The holding company Exor, controlled by the Agnelli family and Ferrari, announced a multi-year partnership with LoveFrom, which consists of Ive and Marc Newson.
Exor says the first product will “bring together Ferrari’s legendary performance and excellence with LoveFrom’s unrivalled experience and creativity.” LoveFrom will also help with creative projects related to luxury.
“We have been friends with John for many years and are great admirers of his insight and vision. We are thrilled to be embarking on such an important, long term collaboration with Ferrari and more broadly Exor. As Ferrari owners and collectors, we could not be more excited about collaborating with this extraordinary company and in particular with the design team expertly led by Flavio Manzoni. We see some uniquely exciting opportunities working together which we believe will yield important and valuable work,” added Marc Newson and Sir Jony Ive.
Ive will join Exor’s Partners Council, an annual forum that brings together a network of industry partners to discuss possible business opportunities.
“In building great companies, we also believe in building great partnerships. Soon after LoveFrom was founded we began to talk with Jony and Marc about opportunities to combine their world-renowned creativity with ours, in complementary and incremental ways. Ferrari represents a first, exciting chance to do great things together as we build our future. I’m also delighted that Jony is joining our Partners Council where we look forward to benefitting from his uniquely valuable perspectives,” said John Elkann, Chairman and Chief Executive of Exor and Chairman of Ferrari, in a statement.
Ive will reunite with Apple’s services chief, Eddy Cue, as the latter sits on Ferrari’s board.
LoveFrom launched two years ago after Ive left Apple with Newson to form a new creative agency, with Apple also being the first client of the new firm. Ive has since recruited designers from Apple’s design team to join him in the new venture. LoveFrom also has Airbnb as a client, announced last October.
Currently, Ferrari offers a hybrid-electric known as the SF90 Stradale, which has a single gas engine combined with three electric motors, for a combined 986 horsepower, able to go from 0-60mph in 2.4 seconds. Oh, and it starts at $507,300 USD (Tesla’s Model S Plaid is a fraction of the price and also is faster).
Ferrari plans to develop its first all-electric car by 2025. With Ive at the helm designing the car, we imagine an electric Ferrari to be incredibly thin, made of all-glass, have no buttons, plus have average battery life (or not).
