Mercedes-Owned Smart Unveils ‘Concept #1’ Electric SUV with Bold Interior
After switching from internal combustion engines (ICEs) to making only electric vehicles (EVs) in 2019, the compact smart Car is getting a new set of design upgrades with a new model, which is reportedly nearing production.
smart Automobile Co. Ltd. unveiled a teaser of its smart Concept #1, a slightly larger SUV concept compact EV that will feature new technologies and added space, according to a press release from smart on Sunday. The vehicle is set to preview at the IAA MOBILITY in Munich, Germany, and will feature a newly-developed user interface using artificial intelligence.
The included artificial intelligence features will include driver assistance systems, drive modes, and ongoing over-the-air updates.
In addition, the smart Concept #1 EV will feature LED lighting strips in the front and back as well as a rhythmic set of light strips offering a show, and ambient lighting in the SUV’s footwell.
Vice President of Global Sales, Marketing & After-Sales at smart Automobile Co. Daniel Lescow said, “We’re celebrating an important milestone with the smart Concept #1, which is the forerunner of the next smart generation.” Lescow continued, “The near-production study is an exciting taste of what our customers can expect from the smart brand. The new smart Concept #1 is the first glimpse of our vision of a new and sustainable mobility. It’s characterized by progressive design, premium equipment and advanced technology.”
Smart Automobile Co. was formed in 1997, and later became a joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and Geely in 2019, though it isn’t clear exactly when the joint venture will deliver the new smart Concept #1 EV will deliver or how it will be priced.
