Tesla Design Chief Discusses New Design Center with China Media

Part of Tesla’s appeal is the sleek design of each of their released vehicles – and, in the case of the Cybertruck, perhaps its bold design – all of which are painstakingly and cross-departmentally mapped out in pre-production, according to new information from a company executive.

In a video conference with several members of the Chinese media earlier this year, Tesla’s Chief of Design Franz von Holzhausen shared information about Tesla’s upcoming design center, how car design happens at Tesla, and a slew of other topics, as reported by Teslarati.

Among a slew of topics covered, von Holzhausen shared that Tesla utilizes a lot of cross-departmental cooperation, with each designer being required to have familiarity with engineering concepts, while engineers must be familiar with design concepts. Together, the departments and Tesla can find solutions more quickly during pre-production, while creating completely unified, finished products.

Tesla also has other concept designs that have yet to be released, like the compact Berlin hatchback teased by CEO Elon Musk. In his interview, von Holzhausen also touched on the idea that it was better to tap into local talent in order to design for a specific region.

While von Holzhausen shared that the Chinese Design Center wasn’t likely to be located in Shanghai, he did say it would still be located somewhere within China. In any case, it’s exciting to get some insight and sneak peeks at Tesla’s design process from Design Chief von Holshausen himself.
