Bidirectional Charging Available in Some Tesla Vehicles

Tesla recently added a new feature to some of its electric vehicles. However, the feature was added quite discretely. When it comes to battery technology, Tesla continues to excel in offering drivers increased flexibility. Now, it looks as though the company added bidirectional charging to some of its vehicle models.

According to a new report from Green Car Reports, Tesla began adding the feature to the Tesla Model 3. Bidirectional charging allows drivers to send DC power from their vehicle’s battery to AC power through the grid. The new feature could further revolutionize both the electric vehicle and green energy spaces as a whole.

In a brief interview excerpt posted on Electrek, engineer Marco Gaxiola shed some light on the new feature. “What I learned on reverse engineering the Model 3 charger, was that the design is fully bidirectional. This means power can be converted from AC to DC the same way as the previous example, but also power can flow in reverse direction, coming from the battery and ending up on the AC side. This is known as DC to AC inverter, and when this technology is present in a vehicle, it is known as V2G (Vehicle to Grid).” At this time, Tesla hasn’t announced plans to enable bidirectional charging on more vehicles.
