Tesla’s China-made Model 3 Sales Down from March to April 2020

The Tesla Model Y has been receiving lots of attention lately, and for good reason. Similarly, Tesla’s halted operations in the United States provide a lively topic of discussion for many both involved in and observing the electric vehicle landscape. However, many forget that Tesla has expanded its market to China.

In addition to the recent launch of the Model Y in North America, the Chinese-made Model 3 continues to garner excitement in the Chinese market. Despite reporting a small profit in the first quarter in North America, Tesla China received some news on Model 3 sales. In a report detailing sales of the China-made Model 3 from March 2020 to April 2020, the numbers declined. According to the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), “U.S. electric vehicle maker Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) sold 3,635 Shanghai-made Model 3 vehicles in China in April, down 64% from March.”

While the figure represents only Chinese sales, the pattern proves typical for Tesla. In most cases, the company reports lower sales in the first quarter of the year. With the added uncertainty put into place by the coronavirus outbreak, many expected lower sales. In any case, demand for the Chinese-made Tesla Model 3 remains high. The company has already received several orders for the electric vehicle.
