Automakers in Michigan Reopen Along with Tesla in California

Tesla’s decision to reopen its Fremont, California production factory despite lawmakers’ objections has gotten the attention of many. However, as an automaker, Tesla certainly isn’t the only company to resume its production in the face of the recent coronavirus outbreak. In a similar announcement this week, many Michigan automotive companies are returning to work.

On Monday, the governor of Michigan, Gretchen Whitmer, permitted the “big three” automakers Ford, General Motors, and Fiat Chrysler, to reopen. Whitmer put the permission into action through the signing of an executive order that allowed manufacturing workers to resume their work in the factories. As a longtime hotbed for automotive manufacturing, Michigan’s return to work presents an interesting comparison to Tesla’s tumultuous situation in California.

Both Governor Whitmer and Tesla CEO Elon Musk outlined some extensive safety protocols that employees should follow when returning to work. Though Tesla has had a bit more difficulty getting local government on board, the approach remains the same. As outlined in a recent blog post by Tesla leadership titled “Getting Back to Work” the electric vehicle manufacturer places the safety of its employees first and foremost. Tesla’s Fremont, California factory has been closed since March. The second week of May marks the company’s return to work.
