Compared: Tesla Model Y High Voltage Battery Versus Model 3 [VIDEO]
As Munro Live’s excellent Tesla Model Y video breakdown series continues, we get some new insights into the Model Y’s high voltage battery. Munro Live has already provided some great video coverage of the nuts and bolts of the Model Y. In this recent installment, closer analysis of the vehicle’s battery reveals some compelling information for viewers.
As stated, the battery pack housing contains many similar components to the Model 3. Munro Live looks at a bulb seal that’s been moved on the Model Y. Instead, a foam pack replaced it to comply with the casting shape of the Model Y.
Two safety interlock bolts complete a circuit in the battery covering’s aluminum layers. This subtle design change makes for an efficient low voltage connector. Taking the lid of the covering off, viewers get a look at the charge module. A low voltage DC output wire is visible on the right side of the battery.
The video also shows two interconnected safety switches. One switch is located on the bottom left of the battery, while the other is located on the top right. The pyro switch also demonstrates Tesla’s mindfulness of safety within its battery engineering. This switch provides an essential function in crashes. In an accident, the pyro switch explodes to destroy the circuit between the two halves of the battery. This cuts the voltage in half immediately.
