Tesla’s Sentry Mode provides essential security measures for drivers both inside and outside of their vehicle. However, in a new reprimand, Tesla has been forced to switch the image it’s been using on the vehicle’s main display. That’s right, after contact from MGM studios, Tesla changed the image from HAL9000 to the turret from Portal.

HAL9000 represents the sinister artificial intelligence from Stanley Kubrick’s science fiction masterpiece “2001: A Space Odyssey.” It remains unclear whether Tesla used the image of HAL9000 as a joke, or more as an honorary nod to the film. In any case, the electric vehicle manufacturer received copyright claims from MGM. In light of the discovery, Tesla changed the image to the turret from the video game Portal.

Even if Tesla no longer has its iconic image, Sentry Mode remains a valuable feature. Of course, some drivers may miss the image. However, Tesla continues to include pop culture references in other parts of their vehicles. It remains to be seen whether the company will face any other copyright issues. After all, there are a number of other easter eggs planted throughout their software and displays. With Sentry Mode remaining an effective tool against theft and break ins, the company continues to cater to its customers when it comes to security.
