United Opens Personal Spotify on Starlink Seatbacks Across Half Fleet
United and Spotify said Wednesday that passengers on Starlink-equipped United jets can QR-login to personal Spotify accounts on seatback screens, with the rollout set to reach half the fleet by next spring.
United Airlines and Spotify said Wednesday that passengers on Starlink-equipped United jets, already covering nearly half its daily flights, can scan a QR code and stream from their own Spotify accounts on the seatback screen.
The airline calls it the first time any carrier has let flyers log into a personal Spotify account from the seatback, powered by the same cabin Wi-Fi SpaceX is installing across the fleet.
Flyers open Spotify on the seatback, scan the code with their phone, and pair the account without typing a password on the shared screen. Once connected, they can resume music, podcasts, audiobooks, playlists, and video content where they left off, browse personalized recommendations, save new favorites, and optionally use the phone as a companion remote.
Andrew Nocella, United’s chief commercial officer, said personalization should not stop at the jet bridge. “Our customers are used to streaming entertainment that’s tailored to them, and that level of personalization shouldn’t stop when they board one of our planes,” he said. “Now, thanks to Starlink, they can watch and listen to their own Spotify content right on their seatback screen and pick up their favorites right where they left off.”
Spotify audio can keep playing while passengers flip to other seatback tools such as the flight map, according to Spotify’s own release, and both Free and Premium accounts work, with features depending on plan and market. Login details stay on the phone, and the seatback logs out automatically at the end of the flight.
United introduced a curated Spotify channel on seatbacks in June 2025 with more than 450 hours of audiobooks, video podcasts, and playlists. That channel remains available across the fleet for passengers who do not see the personal-login app yet. The new personal account streaming is rolling out on Starlink jets now and is set to expand across half of United’s fleet by next spring.
In-flight Wi-Fi itself is already on more than half of United’s daily flights for travelers who stream, work, or shop on their own devices, the airline said, as it keeps installing Starlink toward a full-fleet goal by the end of 2027. United also said it now has more than 181,000 seatback screens and expects more than 219,000 by then.
The carriers did not name which routes or aircraft types get the personal Spotify app first, how many jets already carry it today, or whether other streaming apps will follow the same seatback login model.
CEO Scott Kirby has argued that Starlink is already pulling flyers from rivals, and cabin apps like this are the next layer of that pitch. Residential Starlink is open for order at home while United finishes the fleet.
Would a personal Spotify seatback login change which United flight you pick when the app is on the plane?
