Moravy Says Optimus Will Plug Cybercabs Until Charging Automates

Tesla’s Cybercab can drive itself to a charger, but plugging in still needs hands, and Lars Moravy says Optimus is meant to take that job until a more automated setup is ready.

The Tesla vice president of vehicle engineering made the point in a Cybercab engineering deep dive from Munro Live published Monday, October 26. Moravy said Cybercab keeps a charge port so the robotaxi can use Tesla’s existing charging gear for now, and he floated Optimus as the near-term helper that would handle the plug until that changes.

That charge port is not a leftover. Tesla has already built out a large charging network, including thousands of Superchargers, and Moravy said switching over to a new automated approach is hard, so Cybercab has to be able to use what already exists.

Optimus would be a stopgap in that plan, not the end state. Moravy said Tesla is working on more automated charging as it expands its infrastructure, and that the cab is already built and ready for it. He called that the step change that would mean neither a human nor Optimus has to plug the car in. Beyond saying Optimus should help shortly, he gave no timeline.

The same interview also covered how fast Cybercab production is ramping, with Moravy saying the Cybercab line is outpacing Robotaxi deployments and does not run every day because it can build cars faster than Tesla is putting them on the road.

Will Optimus show up at Superchargers first, or will Tesla jump straight to hands-free Cybercab charging?
