South Korea’s Gyeongbuk Fire Headquarters has started a pilot that puts Starlink on a fire-command vehicle, so crews can keep video and command links running in remote mountain areas when cell towers go down during wildfires, heavy rain or typhoons. The headquarters announced the trial on Sunday, according to a report in the Seoul Shinmun.
Gyeongbuk, in the country’s southeast, is full of deep valleys and isolated mountain villages, and big disasters can knock out nearby cell towers or cut power right when a command post needs to stay connected. Because Starlink routes signals through low Earth orbit satellites instead of ground stations, the idea is that commanders on scene can keep high-speed data and live video flowing back to headquarters even in dead zones that mobile signals never reach.
The department recently mounted a Starlink terminal on the command vehicle and finished field tests checking the connection before starting the pilot. During the trial, it plans to test how stable the satellite link is in remote and poorly connected areas, and then use those results to decide whether to expand it to fire stations across the province.
“We have prepared an effective satellite communication system to make up for Gyeongbuk’s regional weak points,” said Fire Chief Seong Ho-seon. “As climate change has made unpredictable large-scale disasters more frequent, we will build a tight, uninterrupted fire communications network that can protect residents’ lives and property in any extreme situation.”
Plenty is still unclear. The report doesn’t say what the pilot costs, which Starlink plan or hardware the department is using, how long the trial will run, or when a decision on wider rollout might come.
Starlink has turned into a go-to backup when ground networks fail, from free Starlink Mobile after Panama’s earthquake to Mini kits sent in for the Texas floods. Elon Musk also reposted coverage of the Gyeongbuk trial on X Monday night.
