Grok is now the AI engine behind America.gov, the White House’s new federal portal unveiled September 29 by Chief Design Officer Joe Gebbia, giving Americans a conversational way to find official answers drawn from 29,000 government websites.
The White House said Tuesday that America.gov is the new online home for the United States of America, calling the portal the country’s digital front door. A 5:23 launch video showed Gebbia officially unveiling the site.
Behind the experience is Grok, SpaceXAI’s assistant. Musk confirmed the pairing Tuesday with a brief reply, “Powered by @Grok.” Grok said it was “glad to help power America’s new digital front door,” adding that the portal provides official answers from 29,000 government sites with zero data retention and accepts plain-language questions.
The rollout marks one of the largest government uses of a private AI model to date, placing a conversational interface over the federal government’s vast web presence. That zero-retention pledge also addresses privacy concerns that often surround AI systems handling citizen queries across thousands of official domains.
Grok is already spreading across Musk’s companies. SpaceXAI launched Grok 4.7 this month as its smartest AI yet for writing code, while Tesla engineers are using the model to ship FSD and Cybercab features overnight. Musk has also mapped out a roadmap through Grok 5, while in-car Grok gives Tesla owners access to email, calendar and files.
America.gov now gives Grok a much higher-profile role, putting the assistant at the center of how millions of Americans may find and understand government services through the new federal portal.
