Tesla Patents Electric Fan Car With Active Downforce System

Tesla was granted U.S. Patent 12,746,987 B1 on September 29, 2026, covering an electric fan system designed to generate vehicle downforce while also reducing aerodynamic drag.

The patent, titled “Electric fan car,” was awarded to Tesla, Inc. and lists Niccolo Cymbalist and others as inventors. Tesla filed application 18/415094 on January 17, 2024, following a provisional filing made one year earlier on January 17, 2023.

At the center of the design are electric ducted fans positioned at the rear of the vehicle. The system draws air from beneath the car through an internal pathway before sending it out the back, creating additional downforce without relying only on vehicle speed.

Power for the fans comes directly from the vehicle’s high-voltage battery. Tesla’s patent also describes diffusers, a control system and a fan cover used as part of the broader aerodynamic setup.

The design is notable because traditional aerodynamic downforce increases as a vehicle moves faster, while Tesla’s proposed fan system can actively create downforce at lower speeds as well. It also describes cutting drag, suggesting the system is intended to balance grip with aerodynamic efficiency rather than simply add more force against the road.

Attention quickly turned to the upcoming Roadster, where Tslachan suggests the fan technology could eventually appear.

Tslachan highlighted the patent shortly after it was granted, pointing to the rear-mounted electric fans, the high-voltage battery connection and the possibility of generating downforce at any speed while lowering drag. The account also cautioned that a patent does not mean the technology will necessarily reach production.

That distinction remains important. The newly granted patent confirms Tesla has formally protected the electric fan concept, but the document itself does not establish which production vehicle, if any, will use it.
