Tesla Builds First Cybercab Using In-House Cathode Material

Tesla has built the first Cybercab using cathode material produced in-house, marking a manufacturing milestone for the company’s robotaxi program.

The company’s Robotaxi account said Wednesday the gold Cybercab is the first vehicle built with Tesla’s own cathode material, sourced from what it described as the first cathode plant in the Americas. A photo shared with the announcement shows the two-seater with its butterfly doors raised, parked beside a large white bag of cathode material staged on a pallet while dozens of employees gather around the car.

The milestone builds on Tesla’s push to bring battery production in-house. The company shared the first video from inside its cathode factory at Giga Texas last month, and the automaker has already been spotted testing dry cathode 4680 cells in the Cybertruck. Production of the Cybercab itself began this summer, which Tesla confirmed alongside its second-quarter results.

Producing its own cathode material gives Tesla tighter control over battery costs and supply for the Cybercab, the purpose-built two-seater at the center of its autonomous ride-hailing plans. Vertical integration has anchored Tesla’s battery strategy for years, and bringing cathode production in-house cuts its reliance on outside suppliers just as the robotaxi fleet begins to scale. The cathode is among the most expensive components in a battery cell, so manufacturing the material in-house stands to improve the economics of every Cybercab that rolls off the line.

With the first in-house-cathode Cybercab now complete, the focus shifts to how quickly Tesla can scale both vehicle and battery-material output. The announcement ties the cathode plant directly to the robotaxi program, giving Tesla a home-grown supply line for the vehicle at the heart of its autonomous ambitions.
