SpaceX Signs First Starfall Customer for a 2028 Starship Flight

SpaceX’s new Starfall business of returning manufactured products and research payloads from orbit has signed its first known customer, Luxembourg-based mission integrator Space Cargo, CEO Nicolas Gaume told Reuters on September 15, 2026.

Space Cargo plans to fly in 2028 on what Gaume described as Starship’s first commercial mission, placing its BentoBox system inside SpaceX’s disk-shaped Starfall capsule so customer payloads can ride through microgravity and then survive reentry for recovery on Earth. Starfall is an aluminum housing behind a roughly 10-foot (3-metre) heatshield that SpaceX offers for short orbital manufacturing and research trips; the company previously demonstrated a Starfall capsule mission in June after unveiling the program earlier in 2026.

Gaume said the BentoBox can secure up to about one ton of mixed payloads from Space Cargo’s own clients on that flight, and that nearly half of the potential customers for the first Starfall mission are in life sciences and biotechnology. “We’re flying 200 kilos with our current systems, but with Starship and Starfall, we’re going to go to ton and tons” of customer payloads, he told Reuters, adding that volume and flight rhythm are what make the deal matter. SpaceX did not respond to a request for comment, and it has not previously said when Starship will fly its first commercial mission.

The deal extends a program Tesla North readers first saw when SpaceX outlined Starfall’s ocean-recovery manufacturing concept and later flew a Falcon 9 Starfall demo. Rival reentry startups such as Varda Space are already flying capsules, while Starfall leans on SpaceX’s Dragon heatshield experience and the high flight rate Starship is supposed to unlock once development flights give way to operational cadence. Starship’s next test flight window is now listed for mid-to-late September, with early flights after that still expected to prioritize Starlink before a 2028 commercial manifest opens the door for customers like Space Cargo.
