Starlink Powers Real-Time TGS Seismic Data Above Arctic Circle

Starlink said on August 24 that its network enables real-time seismic data transfer for TGS even 138 miles above the Arctic Circle, so vessels can collaborate in some of the most remote waters on Earth.

That Arctic claim sits on a broader fleet rollout. On August 19, Speedcast said it is deploying an all-LEO solution across TGS streamer vessels and Ocean Bottom Node operations. The package centers on Starlink Dedicated Service and is orchestrated with other LEO links through Speedcast’s SIGMA Elite platform.

Speedcast’s press release says the architecture supports near real-time transfer of full-integrity seismic datasets of up to 10 terabytes a day at sustained upload speeds of 1 Gbit/s, replacing physical media shipped off the vessel. Live testing of eight Starlink Performance kits on Dedicated Service hit peak uploads of 950 Mbps, the company said — about three to four times bonded Global Priority performance in that trial. Those figures come from Speedcast’s August 19 release, not from Starlink’s Arctic post alone.

Moving that much survey data over the air lets geophysicists process onshore instead of living weeks-long rotations at sea. It also extends the enterprise path SpaceX has been selling at sea, from Speedcast’s early Starlink reseller deal to Hyundai Glovis’ maritime fleet installs.
