Tesla has secured official regulatory approval to launch a paid public robotaxi service in Nevada, clearing the path for the electric vehicle manufacturer to scale up its autonomous ride-hailing operations in the state.

The Nevada Transportation Authority granted Tesla its full Autonomous Vehicle Network Company permit on August 20, 2026. The new authorization replaces a previous interim operating order that limited the company to a fleet of just 10 test vehicles.

Under the new permit, Tesla is authorized to roll out up to 5,000 autonomous vehicles over the next 12 months. Initial commercial service will focus on Clark County, covering the Las Vegas metropolitan area as well as Harry Reid International Airport and Henderson Executive Airport.

Tesla’s Robotaxi account on X replied to the ruling, saying, “The golden future is upon us.”

“All teams working to hit the 5k the permit was approved for as soon as we possibly can. This permit for clarity is focused on Clarke [County] rather than all of Nevada,” said Eric E., Tesla Vehicle and Robotaxi Engineering Leader, Principal Engineer – Cybercab Engineering Lead, Robotaxi Program, Development, Operations.

Commercial operations are expected to begin within 30 days following required vehicle inspections and final insurance verification. Tesla plans to launch the paid service initially using Model Y electric crossovers, with driverless rides slated to open to the general public after preliminary testing phases.

The regulatory green light marks a major expansion milestone for Tesla’s driverless ride-hailing network as it transitions from small-scale testing to commercial service in Nevada.
