Starlink Delivers Massive 20 Gbps Internet Speeds to Far North Alaska

SpaceX’s satellite internet service is bringing blazing fast connection speeds to one of the most isolated places in North America. Starlink announced it is now reaching top symmetric speeds of 10 Gbps for both downloads and uploads in Utqiagvik, Alaska.

Utqiagvik sits more than 500 kilometres above the Arctic Circle and is known as the northernmost community in the United States. To put those numbers into perspective, these speeds are fast enough to download hundreds of high-definition movies in just a few seconds, marking a massive upgrade for an area that has historically struggled with basic web infrastructure.

By connecting multiple ground stations together through bonded gateways, the network can double that performance to reach up to 20 Gbps. The deployment was completed in partnership with local telecom provider OptimERA xG.

OptimERA xG shared that this project builds on their previous network setups in remote regions. In a statement tracking the launch, the company noted, “Our latest @Starlink deployment builds on the first bonded gateway we installed in Unalaska in 2023, reinforcing a simple principle: connectivity should not fail when it’s needed most.”

While testing out new internet gear from the comfort of our heated office is one thing, seeing hardware handle data at this scale in extreme sub-zero environments is genuinely impressive. This upgrade proves that far northern communities no longer have to settle for sluggish, unstable connections just because of their geography.
