Artificial intelligence pioneer Andrej Karpathy announced on Tuesday that he has joined Anthropic, a leading AI safety and research company.
Karpathy, a prominent figure in the tech world known for his foundational research and educational content, shared the personal update on social media. He expressed immense enthusiasm for his return to core research and development during a critical period for the industry.
“I think the next few years at the frontier of LLMs will be especially formative,” Karpathy stated, referring to large language models. “I am very excited to join the team here and get back to R&D.”
The move marks a major new chapter in Karpathy’s high-profile career, which includes a significant history leading AI development at Tesla. He spent five years at the electric vehicle automaker as the Senior Director of AI, where he led the computer vision team for Tesla Autopilot, overseeing the transition from radar to a pure vision-based Full Self-Driving system.
Karpathy left Tesla in July 2022 to pursue personal projects focused on open-source AI and education, before returning briefly to OpenAI and now taking on his new role at Anthropic. He never did reunite with Musk at his AI startup xAI.
Outside of his corporate roles, he has built a massive following by creating deeply technical, accessible tutorials that teach developers how to build neural networks from scratch. While his new job at Anthropic marks a shift back to corporate research at the frontier of large language models, Karpathy noted that he does not plan to abandon his educational initiatives permanently.
“I remain deeply passionate about education and plan to resume my work on it in time,” he added.
