Leaked Code Suggests SpaceX Is Working on a Rugged Starlink Mini
SpaceX appears to be developing a brand-new, durable version of its portable satellite internet hardware.
According to a report by PC Mag, a reference to a “MINI1_RUGGED_PROD1” model was recently discovered hidden inside the latest Starlink software code. The software detail was spotted by Oleg Kutkov, a Ukrainian communications hardware specialist who frequently handles Starlink equipment repairs.
The inclusion of the term “rugged” strongly points toward a heavy-duty design tailored to withstand harsh weather and intense physical conditions. Experts believe this upcoming model is likely intended for industrial, commercial, or military applications where standard consumer gear might fail.
Furthermore, the “prod1” label indicates that the device has already progressed into actual production, rather than remaining a mere concept on the drawing board.
Kutkov noted that the upcoming hardware features a slightly lower Equivalent Isotropic Radiated Power (EIRP) per channel and a different Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) value compared to the standard portable version. Additionally, the rugged unit includes an extra telemetry stream designated for specialized purposes, which further aligns with heavy industrial or defense use.
This development surfaces just over a year after SpaceX initially indicated to its distributors that a follow-up version of the compact dish was in development.
