Tesla Giga Berlin Hits a Major Milestone — 1 Million Drive Units Manufactured
Tesla announced today that its Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg has officially manufactured its 1 millionth drive unit. The achievement, shared by the company’s manufacturing account on X on April 28, 2026, marks a significant scaling of powertrain production at the German facility.
The drive unit is the heart of the electric vehicle, containing the electric motor, power electronics, and gearbox. Reaching the seven-figure mark for these components highlights the factory’s ability to move beyond simple vehicle assembly and into high-volume manufacturing of critical internal technology.
Tesla shared a photo of Giga Berlin staff outside the building, holding up balloons to mark the 1,000,000 milestone.
Giga Berlin’s Growth
Located in Grünheide, Giga Berlin officially opened its doors in March 2022. While the factory initially faced administrative delays and environmental hurdles, it has quickly become Tesla’s primary hub for the European market.
The production of 1 million drive units follows a massive quarter for the facility. In Q1 2026, the plant set a new vehicle production record by building more than 61,000 Model Y SUVs, averaging nearly 4,700 cars per week.
Tesla is currently in the middle of a major expansion phase at the site. The company recently confirmed plans to hire 1,000 new workers starting in May and will convert 500 temporary roles into permanent positions. This workforce boost is designed to support a planned 20 percent increase in vehicle output, with a goal of reaching 6,000 vehicles per week later this year.
At full capacity, Giga Berlin is designed to produce 500,000 vehicles annually. Reaching 1 million drive units is a key indicator that the facility’s powertrain lines are now operating at a scale capable of supporting those long-term targets.
