Tesla CEO Elon Musk has outlined an ambitious expansion plan for the company’s unsupervised Full Self-Driving (FSD) and Robotaxi services, aiming to operate in approximately 12 states by the end of 2026.
During the company’s latest Q1 earnings call, Musk emphasized a “very cautious” approach to the rollout. He noted that the service has maintained a clean safety record so far, with no injuries or fatalities reported during the initial expansion. Tesla intends to maintain this safety standard by moving slowly as the service grows beyond its initial testing grounds in Austin.
Financial Outlook for Autonomous Driving
While the expansion is significant, Musk tempered expectations regarding immediate financial gains. He stated that revenue from unsupervised FSD and Robotaxis is not expected to be “super material” for the remainder of this year.
However, the outlook for 2027 is much stronger. Musk predicted that the autonomous service will likely contribute to Tesla’s revenue in a “significant way” next year as the fleet grows and the technology reaches more markets.
