Tesla Confirms HW3 Lacks Unsupervised FSD Capability; Plans Hardware Upgrades and “Micro-Factories”
During the Q1 2026 earnings call, Tesla CEO Elon Musk delivered a significant update for owners of Hardware 3 (HW3) vehicles, confirming that these cars cannot achieve full autonomy with their current equipment. Musk admitted, “Hardware 3 simply does not have the capability to achieve unsupervised FSD,” explaining that “memory bandwidth is the choke point” and HW3 possesses “only one eighth of the memory bandwidth of Hardware 4.”
To address this, Tesla is planning an extensive upgrade and trade-in programme. Musk stated that for customers who purchased FSD, the company is offering “a discounted trade in for cars that have AI4 hardware” as well as “the ability to upgrade the car to replace the computer.” However, the upgrade is complex, as Musk noted, “You also need to replace the cameras, unfortunately, to go to Hardware 4.”
New Service Strategy: “Micro-Factories”
To handle the volume of hardware replacements, Tesla intends to move beyond traditional service centres. Musk explained that “we’re going to have to set up like kind of micro factories or small factories, in major metropolitan areas, in order to do it efficiently.” He emphasized that using standard service centres would be “extremely slow” and “inefficient,” requiring “many production lines to make the change.” The long-term goal is to transition the fleet because “that’s what enables them to enter the robotaxi fleet and have unsupervised FSD.”
FSD v14 “Lite” Coming in June
While the hardware transition looms, HW3 owners will still receive software improvements. Ashok Elluswamy, Director of Autopilot Software, confirmed that Tesla will “release a V fourteen version for hardware three” expected “end of June.” This will be a “distilled version” of the v14 software running on AI4 hardware. Elluswamy noted that with this update, HW3 users “should be able to, Start the drives from Park State and basically have all the features that V14 for HW4 has.”
