Flemish Government Reviews Tesla FSD Supervised Following Dutch Approval
The Flemish government has officially confirmed it is reviewing the implementation of Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (Supervised) system in Belgium. The update comes after a formal inquiry was sent to Minister-President Matthias Diependaele, following the breakthrough approval of the technology in the Netherlands last week.
On April 10, 2026, the Dutch vehicle authority RDW granted the first European type approval for Tesla FSD Supervised. While the approval is currently provisionally valid in the Netherlands, it established a regulatory pathway for other EU member states to recognize the system via mutual recognition.
Jonas DM, a Belgian Tesla enthusiast and advocate, recently urged the Flemish government to fast-track this recognition to ensure local owners could benefit from the advanced driver assistance system.
In a verbatim response from the Cabinet of the Minister-President, the government acknowledged the request and confirmed that internal discussions are underway: “Your message was well received and read with interest. It shows your involvement in our society. Minister-President Diependaele thanks you for your insights and for the initiative you are taking.”
The official reply, sent by the Advisor for Local Policy, further clarified that the government is coordinating with relevant departments to assess the technical RDW approval: “Others you addressed are better placed to answer you substantively, yet we are viewing your message internally. We will contact you if additional clarification is needed.”
The Dutch RDW approval (version 2026.3.6) followed 18 months of intensive testing, including 1.6 million kilometres of data from European roads. While the system allows for hands-off driving under specific conditions, it is classified as a Level 2 assistant, requiring the driver to remain fully attentive and legally responsible at all times.
If Flanders moves forward with recognizing the Dutch type approval, Belgium could become one of the next European markets to see a rollout of the software, potentially as early as this summer.
