Zero Disengagements: Watch Tesla FSD 14 Drive a 93-Year-Old Through Sunday Traffic
On a beautiful February day in San Diego County, a 93-year-old grandmother proved that age is just a number when you have the right technology behind the wheel. In a heartwarming video shared by Dan Doyle’s Family Channel, the centenarian-to-be took her brand-new Tesla Model Y equipped with Full Self-Driving (FSD) for a spin, demonstrating a level of independence that many assume fades with time.
The journey began with a 13-mile trek to Mission Valley Christian Fellowship. The drive was remarkably calm, with the son joking with Grok that they should only slow down if the worship music wasn’t good. Dan’s mom laughed and replied about Grok, “I love that lady”. Lol.
The Tesla navigated the route perfectly, arriving exactly at 10:30 a.m. and handling turns onto Mercy Road with professional precision. When asked how the trip from Encinitas felt, the mother gave the ultimate compliment to the FSD system by calling it “uneventful.”
As the day warmed up, the duo headed across the iconic Coronado Bridge to take in the coastal views. Despite the busy Sunday crowds and the typical parking nightmare of a sunny afternoon in Coronado, the vehicle managed the congestion and circled around until it pulled into a spot autonomously. The pair celebrated the successful navigation by eating gelato while the car handled the heavy lifting of the drive back to Dan’s house.
The video serves as a moving tribute to the gift of freedom, safety, and dignity that autonomous technology can provide to seniors, especially Tesla’s FSD. By removing the physical fatigue and mental stress of driving, the Tesla allowed Dan’s mom to reclaim her mobility without relying on others for every trip. As the son dropped his mother off for her independent drive back to Encinitas, they both agreed on a simple summary for the day, saying life is good (while eating gelato while driving).
This is a pretty awesome use case for FSD. But I would hope Dan’s mom still would have the ability to take over if anything were to go wrong with FSD, in case.
