Rivian R2 Officially Launches: $45K Tesla Model Y Rival Arrives This Spring

After two years of anticipation, Rivian has officially launched the R2, its more affordable mid-size electric SUV. Speaking at the SXSW 2026 festival in Austin, Texas, the company confirmed that the first units will begin reaching customers this spring.

The R2 is built on a brand-new mid-size platform and is designed to compete directly with the Tesla Model Y. While it maintains the distinct Rivian face and adventure-ready capability of its larger R1 siblings, it arrives at a significantly lower price point for the mass market. Now, it remains to be seen if Rivian can hit mass production on the R2 based on its timelines. This design is more of a traditional boxy SUV whereas the Model Y is a compact SUV.

US Pricing and Release Timeline

Rivian is staggering the rollout, with the highest-performing models arriving first:

Trim Level Starting Price (USD) Availability
Performance (Launch Package) $57,990 Spring 2026
Premium $53,990 Late 2026
Standard (Long Range) $48,490 First Half 2027
Standard (Base) $45,000 Late 2027

The entry-level Standard model eventually hits the promised $45,000 price mark before destination fees, though buyers will have to wait until late next year to take delivery of that specific version.

Tesla’s entry Model Y RWD starts from $39,990 US and is available now, whereas this entry $45,000 R2 isn’t coming until “late 2027” which could also bleed into early 2028.

Key Specs and Features

The R2 Performance Launch Package is the flagship of the lineup, boasting 656 horsepower and a 0-60 mph time of just 3.6 seconds. It features a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system and an EPA-estimated range of 330 miles.

Notable features across the R2 lineup include an open-air experience where all four passenger windows and the rear liftgate glass drop fully. It is adventure-ready with 9.6 inches of ground clearance and a 4,400-lb towing capacity. For car camping or hauling large gear, all seats, including the front row, fold completely flat. Out of the box, the R2 features a native NACS port, giving it seamless access to the Tesla Supercharger network.

All trims come equipped with the hardware for Rivian’s Autonomy+ hands-free driving system. For a limited time, Launch Package buyers receive a lifetime subscription to the service, which otherwise carries a $49.99 monthly fee.
