After more than nine years of offering Full Self-Driving (FSD) as a one-time software purchase, Tesla has officially pulled the plug on the upfront option in North America.
As expected, the previous $8,000 one-time FSD purchase — available either when ordering a vehicle or after delivery — is no longer available in the U.S. Going forward, Tesla’s advanced driver assistance system is subscription-only, priced at $99 per month or $999 per year. The move marks the end of a controversial purchase model that once peaked at $15,000 and frequently drew criticism over pricing versus capability.
The shift aligns with Tesla’s broader software-first strategy. As of Q4 2025, 1.1 million Tesla owners have either purchased or subscribed to FSD (Supervised), underscoring just how central the feature has become to the company’s long-term roadmap. CEO Elon Musk has also confirmed that the subscription price will increase as FSD improves — particularly once an unsupervised version becomes reality, which could trigger the biggest pricing jump yet.
Interestingly, there is one notable exception — at least for now.
Tesla appears to be keeping the Luxe Package alive for the Model S, Model X, and Cybertruck Cyberbeast. The $15,000 bundle includes FSD, lifetime Supercharging, free lifetime Premium Connectivity, and four years of Premium Service. With production of the Model S and Model X set to end later this year, Tesla may be aiming to keep average selling prices and margins elevated as buyers rush to secure final units.
It’s unclear how long the Luxe Package will remain available, but for buyers who still want to “own” FSD outright — bundled perks included — that may now be the only path forward.
Tesla appears to be following a similar blueprint globally. In Australia, the one-time FSD purchase option is set to disappear on March 31, 2026, with other regions likely to follow.
One thing is certain: Tesla’s transition to a subscription-only FSD future is now officially underway.
