Rivian’s long-anticipated R2 is almost here. In a post on X, Rivian teased the upcoming debut of its more affordable electric SUV, writing, “The wait is almost over. The first R2 variant, featuring dual motors and all-wheel drive, launches this spring.”
The company confirmed it will be sharing full details about the R2, including pricing, options, and more, on March 12, adding playfully, “That’s just 4 weeks and 2 days from today. But who’s counting?”
The March 12 reveal marks a major milestone for Rivian, coming just over two years after the company first announced the R2. At the time, excitement was immediate, with over 68,000 reservations pouring in within the first 24 hours alone. Now, we’re finally about to get the full picture.

While Rivian hasn’t disclosed final specs yet, it has previously claimed the R2 will sprint from 0–60 mph in under 3 seconds and deliver more than 300 miles of range. The SUV is expected to seat five passengers and offer a 360-degree open-air experience, complete with powered rear glass and what Rivian calls an “ultimate car camping experience” that leans into the brand’s adventure-focused DNA.
Initial R2 production will take place at Rivian’s existing plant in Normal, Illinois. Longer term, the EV maker is also building a $5 billion factory east of Atlanta, Georgia, which is expected to eventually produce the R2 alongside the smaller R3 and R3X models.
The R2’s launch could also coincide with Rivian’s broader software ambitions. The company is preparing to roll out Autonomy+, a paid driver-assist and self-driving subscription service designed to compete with Tesla’s Full Self-Driving system.
With pricing, trims, and final production details set to be unveiled in just weeks, the R2 may prove to be Rivian’s most important vehicle yet — one aimed squarely at scaling beyond its premium R1 lineup and into the mainstream EV market.
