Tesla’s Shanghai Megafactory Doubles Output in Just 5 Months

Tesla’s Shanghai Megafactory has quietly hit a major production milestone. According to People’s Daily Online, the company produced more than 2,000 Megapack energy storage systems in 2025, marking the facility’s first full year of operation and reinforcing Tesla Energy’s rapid global expansion.
The Shanghai Megafactory, located in the Lin-gang Special Area of the China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone, officially began production in early 2025. It’s Tesla’s second major manufacturing site in the city after the Shanghai Gigafactory and, importantly, the company’s first dedicated energy storage factory outside the United States. From the outset, the factory was built with exports in mind, and the majority of those Megapacks have been shipped overseas, primarily to Europe and Australia — two of Tesla Energy’s strongest markets for utility-scale battery storage.
Production ramped at a steady pace throughout the year. By late July, the factory had already produced its first 1,000 Megapacks, hitting that mark in just under six months. By the end of 2025, output had doubled, with the second 1,000 units rolling off the line over the final five months of the year. That translates to an average of roughly 200 Megapacks per month, a sign of a controlled and deliberate ramp as Tesla refined operations, staffing, and supply chains.
Once fully ramped, the Shanghai Megafactory is expected to produce up to 10,000 Megapacks annually, equivalent to about 40 GWh of energy storage capacity. Each Megapack can store roughly 4 MWh of electricity and is designed to support grid stability and large-scale renewable energy integration.
Shanghai now joins Tesla’s growing Megapack manufacturing footprint. The company’s California Megafactory built its 10,000th Megapack back in late 2024, and Tesla is already constructing a third Megapack factory in Texas as demand for large-scale energy storage continues to surge. With Shanghai now firmly online, Tesla Energy’s global ambitions are becoming harder to ignore.
