Elon Musk Predicts Tesla Robots Will Be Better Than Surgeons

Elon Musk recently sat down with Peter Diamandis and Dave Blundin at Gigafactory Texas for a wide-ranging, three-hour deep dive into the future of technology. Filmed last month, the discussion touched on everything from artificial intelligence to space exploration, providing a rare look at what the Tesla and SpaceX CEO expects for the year ahead.
One of the more surprising revelations involved Tesla’s potential entry into the semiconductor manufacturing space. Musk critiqued the current state of modern chip fabs, suggesting their clean rooms are being designed incorrectly. He made a bold bet, saying Tesla will eventually operate a 2nm fab that is so advanced it would allow him to eat a cheeseburger and smoke a cigar inside without compromising the environment.
The conversation also highlighted the massive scale of Tesla’s AI efforts. Musk discussed the upcoming Cortex 2 GPU training cluster, which is expected to be a 500MW operation by the middle of 2026. Tesla’s Cortex clusters are critical to the company’s roadmap, as they train the AI behind Full Self-Driving (FSD) and the Optimus robot. Musk predicted that within three years, Optimus could even outperform the best human surgeons. Tesla recently showcased just how far the robot has come, releasing a video of Optimus autonomously and smoothly jogging across a laboratory floor.
For enthusiasts of the next-generation Tesla Roadster, Musk offered a candid and thrilling teaser. While Musk originally aimed for a late 2025 debut, the Roadster’s prototype unveiling has shifted into 2026. He described the upcoming reveal as a “cool demo” that represents “the best of the last” human-driven cars. However, he added a characteristic warning: if safety is your primary concern, this may not be the car for you.
This latest sit-down follows Musk’s recent comments regarding the potential convergence of Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI during another interview at Giga Texas. As the singularity approaches, Musk remains optimistic that these technologies will lead to a future of abundance, despite a “bumpy” transition over the next few years.
