Tesla Insurance Expands to Its First New State in 3 Years

Tesla Insurance has officially launched in Florida, marking its first expansion into a new U.S. state in more than three years. The move quietly ends a long stretch of radio silence around Tesla’s in-house insurance product, which last expanded in November 2022 when it became available in Minnesota.

The news was first shared by longtime Tesla watcher Sawyer Merritt (@SawyerMerritt), who confirmed that Tesla Insurance is now live for new Tesla buyers in Florida. With the addition of the Sunshine State, Tesla Insurance is now available in 13 U.S. states in total.

Florida is a particularly notable addition. It’s one of the largest auto insurance markets in the country and also one of the most expensive, plagued by high premiums, fraud concerns, and insurer pullbacks in recent years. For Tesla, entering Florida could be both a major opportunity and a real-world stress test for its data-driven insurance model.

Tesla Insurance differs from traditional auto insurance by heavily factoring in real-time driving behavior. Premiums are calculated using a mix of variables, including the specific Tesla model you drive, where you live, how much you drive, what coverage you select, and your vehicle’s monthly Safety Score. That score is derived directly from the car’s sensors and driving data, rewarding safer driving habits with lower rates.

At launch, there is one important limitation. Tesla Insurance in Florida is currently only available to new Tesla owners. Existing Tesla owners in the state are not yet able to switch over, though Tesla has historically expanded eligibility in phases after entering a new market.

The expansion also comes as Tesla Insurance continues to face scrutiny. The program has drawn criticism in the past, including a class-action lawsuit filed over how driving data is used to calculate premiums. That legal backdrop may help explain why Tesla has taken a cautious, slow-and-steady approach to expanding the insurance business after its last rollout more than three years ago.

Still, the Florida launch suggests Tesla may be ready to restart broader expansion. With millions of Teslas already on the road and increasingly sophisticated vehicle telemetry, insurance remains one of the company’s more intriguing long-term plays — especially in markets where traditional insurers struggle to price risk effectively.

For now, new Tesla buyers in Florida get first dibs. Whether Tesla Insurance opens up to existing owners in the Sunshine State or expands into more states next remains the big question.
