Tesla Breaks Massive Car Sales Record in Norway

Tesla has officially shattered one of the longest-standing automotive records in Norway — and it did so with more than a month still left on the calendar. According to new registration data, the automaker has now logged 26,649 vehicle registrations in 2025, surpassing Volkswagen’s nearly decade-old record of 26,575 units set back in 2016.

“With over a month left, we’ve now broken an almost decade-long record by becoming the brand with the most vehicles registered in a single year in Norway,” Tesla said in a post on X. The milestone also comes just days after Tesla was reported to be on track to crush that record.

The momentum isn’t exactly surprising. Tesla has been on a tear in Norway throughout 2025, building on two massive sales spikes earlier in the year. The Model Y topped national car sales in August and again in September, capturing an astonishing 28.8% of all passenger vehicle sales during the latter month — a share almost unheard of in any mature auto market. That surge helped accelerate demand heading into the fall, especially as Norwegian buyers look to lock in purchases before the government’s proposed VAT threshold reduction kicks in and pushes EV prices up.

Despite offering only two volume models — the Model 3 and Model Y — Tesla now sits at a commanding 19% market share in Norway. That’s roughly one in every five new car buyers choosing a Tesla, even as the broader European market has cooled. The company’s dominance was cemented even further earlier this year when the Model Y overtook the Nissan Leaf to become Norway’s all-time best-selling electric vehicle, a symbolic milestone in the world’s leading EV market.

Norway remains a rare bright spot for Tesla in the Nordics. While Sweden has seen steep declines amid union-led blockades and delivery disruptions, Norway continues to push Tesla to new heights — and with several weeks still remaining in 2025, the automaker’s final tally may land well above today’s record-breaking number.
