Tesla Reveals Redesigned Semi Truck with Model Y-Style Light Bar

Tesla has officially unveiled a redesigned version of its all-electric Semi truck, featuring a more efficient powertrain, increased payload capacity, and a fresh exterior look inspired by the Model Y. Elon Musk announced the update during Tesla’s 2025 annual shareholder meeting on Thursday, confirming that deliveries will begin in 2026.
According to Tesla, the new Semi is more efficient, has increased payload capacity, and is designed for autonomy. The truck now achieves an impressive efficiency of 1.7 kWh per mile — about a 15% improvement over the original model, which had an advertised figure of 2 kWh per mile. It retains a 500-mile range and introduces a new Model Y-style light bar across the front, giving it a sleeker, more modern appearance.
Under the hood, the redesigned Semi boasts 800 kW of drive power and supports up to 1.2 MW (1,200 kW) peak charging speeds using Tesla’s next-generation charging system. Tesla began installing its first public V4 Supercharger cabinets earlier this fall, including the first site capable of delivering the ultra-fast 1.2 MW charging supported by the Semi.
The revamped truck will use Tesla’s in-house 4680 battery cells — the same cells that power the Cybertruck and the upcoming Cybercab. Production of the new Semi will take place at Tesla’s dedicated Semi manufacturing facility being built near Gigafactory Nevada. Once complete, the plant will support full-scale manufacturing with a target capacity of 50,000 units per year.
Tesla hasn’t yet specified the exact payload increase, though the current Semi is rated for up to 47,000 lbs. The company says the new design also features significant improvements under the skin and is purpose-built for full self-driving capability.
Adoption of the Tesla Semi has been ramping up in recent months, with the truck recently headlining Uber Freight’s new Dedicated EV Fleet Accelerator Program — a major step toward wider commercial use of heavy-duty electric trucks.
